- The Image Odyssey Sprite Graphics Library FAQ
-
- Version 1.0
-
- By: Ari Feldman
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- NOTE: This is NOT an advertisement! Rather, the purpose of this
- FAQ is to answer several of the questions that have been
- asked of me since I made my original announcement/posting
- on the group. In addition, this FAQ will provide you with
- additional product info as well as include a couple of
- sample UUENCODED .GIFs of my sprites so you can see the
- quality of my work and the product in general.
-
-
-
-
-
- 1. Q: What exactly is this product?
-
- A: This product is essentially an animated VGA sprite
- graphics library for game, multimedia, and educational
- programmers of all levels.
-
- Its purpose is provide these developers with a
- 'plug-in-play' collection of high quality graphics to
- use in their programs. This way, programmers don't
- have to waste time drawing their graphics from scratch
- or spend money on graphic artists, etc.
-
- All of my artwork is original, by the way!
-
-
-
- 2. Q: What's the name of your product?
-
- A: The name of my product is officially the 'Image
- Odyssey'.
-
-
-
- 3. Q: Do you require users to pay any license fees or
- royalties for the use of your artwork?
-
- A: Absolutely not! All that I ask is that you legally
- purchase (or register) for the Image Odyssey. In
- return, legal users will receive a special user license
- that will allow them virtually unlimited use of my
- sprites in their programs. About the only thing legal
- users can't do is to modify and/or re-sell my sprites
- as a separate graphics collection or bundle them with
- other graphic and game design tools.
-
- All registered users will also be required to include
- my personal copyright on the title screen and
- documentation for any program they write that features
- my artwork. All in all, this is not that big of deal
- considering the freedom users will otherwise have...
-
-
-
- 4. Q: What graphic format will you use?
-
-
- A: I plan to distribute all of the sprites in the initial
- collection of the Image Odyssey in 256 color .PCX
- format. This format is widely used and supported by
- virtually all graphics packages and game design tools.
- I have (and will continue) to test my .PCX files with
- these packages to assure that there will be no problems
- when importing these screens, etc.
-
- Optionally, users can also elect to obtain a version of
- the Image Odyssey in .GIF 87a format should they wish.
-
- Using picture files is the best way to keep all
- potential users happy as I would be limiting myself if
- I chose to support only one or two proprietary sprite
- formats, etc.
-
-
-
- 5. Q: What size(s) are your sprites?
-
-
- A: The included sprites range in size from 16x10 pixels to
- as large as 128x128 (static). Approx. 50% are 32x20
- pixels, 30% are 16x20 pixels, while the remainder fall
- in between the min and the max sizes.
-
- I decided to keep the bulk of the sprites 32x20 and
- under because we all know that big sprites animate
- slower and hog up too much RAM and disk space.
-
- At least 95% of the sprites are fully animated - of
- these, all use between 2-6 frames of animation with the
- most common amount being 2-3 frames of animation per
- sprite.
-
- This allows my library to support virtually all speed
- PCs and programming languages!
-
-
-
- 6. Q: What kind of sprites do you support?
-
-
- A: Many, many different types. The Image odyssey will
- support over a dozen different game themes right out of
- the package! These include the following:
-
-
- * Galaxian(tm) style shooters
-
- * Space Invaders(tm) style shooters
-
- * Nintendo & SEGA(tm) like platform games
-
- * Role Playing Games
-
-
- I provide an ample supply of sci-fi oriented spaceships
- and aliens, platform characters, vehicles, pickups,
- shots, missiles, explosions, and bonus numbers.
-
- There is enough variety to keep one occupied for quite
- sometime - and that's not counting the fact that many
- can be 'mixed & matched' (i.e. combined with eachother)
- to form entirely new sprite sets.
-
-
- 7. Q: How many sprites are included in the library?
-
-
- A: I plan to include approx. 700 sprites - give or take a
- few as I weed out bad ones and dream-up new ones.
-
-
- 8. Q: How many colors are your sprites?
-
-
- A: My sprites are VGA quality. I use a 100 color palette
- and all of the primary colors that I use (i.e. red,
- grey, green, etc.) have 16 shades of luminance each.
-
- I left the rest of the palette entries blank so that
- you programmers can perform special screen effects
- and/or add their own backgrounds, etc. In a nutshell,
- I wanted to provide programmers with lots of freedom
- regarding the color palette as no one wants to be
- locked into a proprietary color scheme.
-
-
-
- 9. Q: What kind of support will registered users get?
-
-
- A: In addition to the special user license and a clear
- conscience, registered users will receive discounts on
- future sprite libraries and special offers on future
- products, etc.
-
- You see, the Image Odyssey is just the first of a whole
- collection of computer artwork! I plan to release
- several smaller "add-on" graphic libraries every
- quarter that will add to the functionality of the Image
- Odyssey. Among other items, in the works are:
-
-
- * A background tile library (16x16 tiles)
-
- * A Street Fighter(tm) style combat sprite library
-
- * A military oriented library (planes & tanks)
-
- * A GUI & icon library
-
- * A Smash-TV(tm) sprite library
-
- * Additional arcade sprites...
-
-
- As I plan to release similar (but not identical)
- versions of the Image Odyssey for other platforms such
- as the Atari ST series and the Mac, registered users
- can obtain these versions at a substantial discount.
-
-
-
- 10. Q: What will it cost?
-
-
- A: The initial collection of approx. 700 sprites will cost
- $25 US + shipping.
-
- Additional libraries can be purchased for $8 each +
- shipping. (most of these libraries will have 200
- sprites)
-
- Discounts for the add-on libraries will certainly be
- available.
-
- Foreign prices in (the UK and Germany) are not yet
- established but expect them to be around the same as
- their US counterparts.
-
- I feel these prices are quite reasonable considering
- the overall product quality and the sheer scope of the
- package.
-
-
-
- 11. Q: When will the Image Odyssey be available?
-
-
- A: I expect the Image Odyssey to be ready for domestic US
- distribution and sale by December 15, 1994.
-
- The US package will be distributed as Shareware while
- the European version *may* be sold commercially.
-
-
-
- 12. Q: Where can I get a copy?
-
-
- A: Please contact me directly at the following addresses:
-
- Internet: FELDAK79@SNYONEVA.CC.ONEONTA.EDU
-
- US Mail: Ari Feldman
- Box 265 Blodgett Hall
- State University College
- Oneonta, NY 13820
-
-
- I will provide you with all sales info and put you in
- contact with my distributor(s) for the product.
-
-
-
- 13. Q: Ok, it shounds good - now what do your sprites
- actually look like?
-
-
- A: No problem! Below are two UUENCODED .GIF 87a files
- that demo both the Image Odyssey and one of the
- up-coming add-on libraries.
-
- Again, feel free to e-mail me or write me for
- additional product info and/or pictures.
